The Abstractor for New Testament Abstracts (NTA) contributes to the general editorial functions (as directed by the Editor), principally the composition the content of NTA. This individual assists the Editor and Assistant Editor in monitoring all publications, books and journals, relevant to the modern discipline of New Testament studies and produces book notices and abstracts for NTA. In addition to the biblical materials, the field consists of Jewish and Hellenistic / Greco-Roman history, literature, culture, religion, etc., generally from the time of Alexander the Great to Constantine. It alsoincludes various related sub-disciplines, such as archeology, Rabbinic Judaism, the Dead Sea scrolls, and Gnosticism, as well as modern hermeneutical and literary, anthropological, social-scientific methods and theories and the like. This position assumes the ability to read and make determinations about scholarly work in various modern languages (most frequently, apart from English, this means German, French, Italian, and Spanish).
This position reports to the Editor of NTA and works closely with the Assistant Editor of NTA.
NTA is recognized worldwide as reliable source of curated information owing to its direct production by specialists in the field. The most recent complete volume (64, 2020) contained 1200 periodical abstracts and 395 book notices. The current goal is to move these numbers up in the area of 1500 abstracts and 500 book notices annually over the next number of years. Published issues are subscribed to throughout the world, primarily by colleges, universities, and seminaries. Print publication is now supplemented by an online version, which starts with volume 30 (1986), which provides students and scholars with all of the advantages of a searchable database format. This version is produced in cooperation with the American Theological Library Association and is subscribed to by some 300 institutions of higher learning. The routine availability of NTA to the entire faculty and student body of hundreds of seminaries and universities the world over means that NTA is being utilized by more people now than at any time in its sixty-five-year history. The Abstractor supports the Editor and Assistant Editor in the composition and editing of material included in NTA. The main responsibility for the Abstractor is writing (initially) approximately 300 abstracts/book notices per issue and 800 abstracts/book notices per year (issue 3 has less content to allow room for the indexes). Unlike virtually any other academic journal, NTA does not simply present material submitted by outside authors, but composes all of the content in-house. NTA is recognized worldwide as a reliable source (“brand”) because of its direct production by trained specialists (Ph.D./Th.D.) in the field.
Editorial duties (e.g., preparation of indexes) or assistance with various administrative duties (e.g., answering email, corresponding with journal/book publishers) as determined by the Editor.

Involved in scholarly projects and professional organizations; Serves as part of STM administrative team, participating in regular meetings and the overall life of the school. Decision Making and Problem Solving The principal ongoing challenge is the timely composition of abstracts of scholarly articles and book notices owing to the extensive inflow of new publications on a daily basis. Currently each annual volume includes abstracts and book notices for 1600 plus items. The hope is that with this new position, these numbers can be gradually be increased as the Abstractor gains more experience.

Functional and Technical Competencies
Advanced knowledge of the field of NT studies and immediately allied fields such as Patristics, Judaic studies, Greco-Roman studies, etc. (see under Role Summary). Reading knowledge of NT Greek is assumed as is the ability to follow technical discussions of other ancient Greek texts. Knowledge of ancient Hebrew, Latin, Coptic, and other languages sufficient to follow discussions focused on scholarship relevant to NT studies is assumed.
In terms of modern languages, the position assumes familiarity not only with English-language scholarship but also that originating in German, French, Italian, and Spanish.
Computer proficiency—e.g., utilize folders and files on a server shared with other contributors in the office and by VPN.
Education/Training and Certification, Licensure, Registration Requirements
Advanced degree in Biblical Studies, Ph.D./Th.D. preferred. Editorial experience is very desirable.
Previous writing and editing experience is highly desirable. Participation in current scholarly societies and conferences is beneficial. Demonstrated proficiency in reading and summarizing academic scholarship in biblical studies published in English as well as in German and French (as well as Spanish and Italian); and ability to summarize basic information with the aid of dictionaries in a limited number of cases for various other languages. Demonstrated knowledge of ancient Greek (Hebrew and Latin is also beneficial). Ability to meet deadlines is essential.
Exceptional Work Schedule Demands
The requirements for producing NTA can be exceptional, sometimes involving evening and weekend work, and continues throughout the year, not only on the academic yearschedule.
