Assistant Professor of Theology (New Testament)

The Department of Theology at Marquette University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in New Testament beginning August 2026.
We seek a scholar whose expertise lies in the New Testament—preferably Gospels—and who has research interests in the history of New Testament interpretation and its theological appropriation. In addition to a solid foundation in New Testament studies, candidates should demonstrate a research agenda that engages one or more of the following areas:
• The reception history of the Gospels/New Testament, including their interpretation and influence across diverse historical contexts
• Early Christian trajectories in Scriptural interpretation : how early Christian theologians, exegetes, and ecclesial writers interpreted, defended, and employed early Jewish and Christian texts
• The use of the New Testament within Christian spirituality, including its role in the writings of Christian mystics and in the development of various spiritual and devotional traditions
• The theological appropriation of the New Testament, focusing on how systematic/dogmatic and moral theologians have drawn upon the New Testament in shaping doctrines, ethics, and theological method
• Interdisciplinary approaches that bring the Gospels’ portrayal of Jesus into conversation with Christology and New Testament ethics, exploring how these domains inform and illuminate one another
• The reception of the New Testament in Christian art and material culture, examining how visual, musical, and literary traditions have interpreted, embodied, and transmitted New Testament texts across history

Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in New Testament studies, including courses focused on the Gospels, their reception history, and interpretive traditions within early Christianity.
- Teach Foundations in Theology, which introduces undergraduates to the Christian understandings of ultimate reality and the virtuous life considering the theological and scriptural understandings of human existence.
- Develop and offer graduate seminarson topics such as Patristic/Early Church exegesis, the use of New Testament texts in Christian mysticism and spirituality, and/or theological or ethical appropriations of the New Testament.
- Conduct and publish original research that contributes to one or more of the following areas:
- the reception history of the Gospels and New Testament; Formation of biblical canon
- Patristic/Early Church interpretation and theological engagement with the New Testament;
- the role of New Testament texts in Christian spirituality or mystical traditions;
- Interdisciplinary approaches bridging Jesus in the Gospels, Christology, and New Testament ethics.
- Advise and mentor students in biblical studies, theology, and related fields, including supervising capstone projects, theses, and doctoral dissertations.
- Has familiarity with contemporary theoretical and methodological approaches to scripture.
- Participate in departmental and institutional service, including curriculum development, committee work, program assessment, and contribution to the academic life of the institution.
- Engage in scholarly and public-facing dialogue, representing the department and institution through conferences, lectures, community engagement, and collaborative projects.
- Contribute to an intellectually diverse academic community, fostering constructive dialogue across theological traditions and methodological approaches.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Earned doctorate or a terminal degree. Demonstrated potential for teaching excellence and high quality research.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ph.D. (or equivalent terminal degree) in New Testament studies, Early Christian studies, Theology, or a closely related field, with demonstrated expertise in at least one of the position’s focal areas (by August 2026)
- Evidence of strong scholarly potential or achievement, such as peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, or a defined research agenda that aligns with the responsibilities listed above.
- Demonstrated competence in relevant research languages, such as Greek (required), with additional languages like Latin, Hebrew, Syriac, Coptic, Ethiopic, Armenian, or other early Christian languages considered an asset.
Engagement with the field through ongoing participation in major scholarly organizations (e.g., the Catholic Biblical Association, the Society of Biblical Literature), including regular conference presentations or service. - Experience in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, with a commitment to pedagogical excellence and inclusive, student-centered learning.
- Ability to engage constructively with diverse interpretive traditions, including historical-critical, theological, and interdisciplinary approaches.
- Capacity for collegial collaboration, service, and participation in the life of the department and institution.
- Commitment to integrating rigorous scholarship with broader conversations in Christian theology, ethics, spirituality, and the study of the early Church.
- Support for Marquette’s identity and mission as a Catholic, Jesuit institution, and for the Department’s identity and mission as an ecumenical faculty welcoming students to the study of theological traditions rooted in faith.
