In Memoriam


CBA mourns the passing of three members who departed this earthly life in September. 

Robert A. Kraft (March 18,1934 - September 15, 2023), American Berg Professor of Religious Studies Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania, became a member of CBA in 1991. After earning an M.A. in New Testament from Wheaton College, Kraft completed his Ph.D. in 1961 at Harvard University in the History and Philosophy of Religion. He was a founding member of the Philadelphia Seminar on Christian Origins. In 2006 Kraft served as president of the Society of Biblical Literature. He was also on the Bible Translation Commission(s) for the Revised Standard (RSV) and New Revised Standard (NRSV) Versions of the Bible. 



Michael L. Barré, P.S.S. (August 14, 1943 - September 25, 2023) became an Associate member of CBA in 1971 and was voted in as an Active (Full) member in 1978 after he achieved his Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies at Johns Hopkins University that same year. Barré taught OT and NT at St. Patrick's Seminary at Menlo Park (1970-73, 1978-92) and at St. Mary’s Seminary & University, Baltimore (1992-2016). He was very active in CBA, serving as an Associate Editor of CBQ (1983-90),  CBQMS General Editor (1991-2000) and CBA President, 1998-99. He also served on the CBA Board of Trustees (2002-05) and Nominations Committee (2003-07).



Ibitolu Olu Jerome Megbelayin (February 14, 1948 - September 26, 2023) was ordained in 1982 for the Diocese of  Lokoja, Nigeria. He came to America for Biblical Studies, receiving an M.A. from St. John's University, NY in 1992, and an S.T.L. in 1995 and a Ph.D.in 2002 from St. Paul University, Ottawa. Megbelayin became an Associate member of CBA in 1998 and was voted a Full member in 2002.

May the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
