CBA Welcomes an Unbound Book Review of Stephen L. Cook's
Commentary on Daniel
A part of CBA's series of free virtual events which draw together scholars from diverse fields to discuss a recent publication through reflection on specific questions.
1) Cook proposes a “middle way” that takes Daniel’s historical contexts seriously while resisting interpretations that reduce its visions to those contexts. What becomes visible when Daniel is allowed to speak in its own apocalyptic register?
2) How does Cook’s holistic reading of the court tales and visions reshape our understanding of empire, resistance, and divine sovereignty—and Daniel’s hope for the restoration and ennoblement of genuinely human life?
3) At several points, Cook retrieves classical readings of Daniel that modern historical criticism has tended to set aside. What becomes possible—and what problems arise—when these older interpretations are brought back into serious conversation with contemporary critical scholarship?
After a brief introduction to the work from Stephen L. Cook we welcome reviews from Mattias Henze (Rice University), Aburey Buster (Wheaton), and Sarah Wisialowski (University of Oxford).
