CBA Welcomes an Unbound Book Review of Hugo Méndez's
The Epistles of John: Origins, Authorship, Purpose
A part of CBA's series of free virtual events which draw together scholars from diverse fields to discuss a recent publication through reflection on specific questions.
In this Unbound Book Review, we will gather to reflect on the following questions:
1) Méndez argues that the letters of 1, 2, and 3 John only present themselves as if they come from a single voice, while actually reflecting three different and probably unconnected authors. How would this change in perspective change our understanding of what the ‘Johannine' literature or 'Johannine' tradition is?
2) Assuming the previous hypothesis is true, how do the central themes shift in the Johannine literature?
After a brief introduction to the work from Hugo Méndez, we welcome reviews from Chris Skinner, Sherri Brown, and Alberto Solano.
