CBA Welcomes an Unbound Book Review of Rebecca Harris'
Religious Experience and Divinization in the Sectarian Dead Sea Scrolls
A part of CBA's series of free virtual events which draw together scholars from diverse fields to discuss a recent publication through reflection on specific questions.
In this Unbound Book Review, we will gather to reflect on the following questions:
1) What are the strengths and limits of the category of liminality for understanding religious experience and divinization in the sectarian Dead Sea Scrolls?
2) Harris argues that sectarian rituals and liturgy did more than define the group: they helped people experience communion with divine beings and hope for life in the heavenly realm. How convincing is that claim, and how does she connect the texts to actual practice?
3) How does this reading change the way we understand the sectarian scrolls?
After a brief introduction to the work from Rebecca Harris, we welcome reviews from Eileen Schuller (McMaster Divinity College), Christine Rosa de Freitas (Oxford), and Joseph Kimmel (Boston College).
