CALL FOR PAPERS FOR 2013 MEETING
(OPENED 15 SEPTEMBER 2012)
The Eastern Great Lakes Biblical Society will hold its 2013 Annual Meeting on April 4-5 in Erie, PA at the Clarion Lake Erie & Bel-Aire Conference Center (2800 West 8th St., Erie, PA 16505).
A learned society of Biblical scholars sponsored in part by the American Schools of Oriental Research, the Catholic Biblical Association, & the Society of Biblical Literature, the EGLBS invites paper or poster-session proposals from members of any of these organizations, scholars in higher education, ministers, students (with a professor's nomination), and other interested parties.
Please note that EGLBS is not affiliated with the American Academy of Religion. While AAR members are welcome to participate in EGLBS meetings, paper proposals on topics unrelated to the Ancient Near East and/or the Bible and cognate literature ought to be directed elsewhere (e.g., to AAR Midwest or the Ohio Academy of Religion). You may reserve a room by calling the hotel directly and asking for the Great Lakes Biblical Society Room Block. Rooms are $79.99 per night (plus taxes) for single or double and this rate will be available until March 11, 2013. You may be able to reserve a room after that date, but the rate is not guaranteed. (Meal options will be handled in the conference registration process).
CALL FOR PAPERS / POSTER PRESENTATIONS OPENED 15 SEPTEMBER 2012
Paper proposals will be considered under the following categories. Select the category that best fits your paper topic and send the necessary information to the appropriate Convener(s) by electronic mail.
NB: In order to foster wider participation, individuals are limited to one presentation at the annual meeting. If you are making multiple proposals, make sure to inform the appropriate conveners and indicate which of the presentations you would prefer to give (since only one per person is permitted).
The deadline for receipt of paper proposals for the 2013 annual meeting (including any necessary supporting materials) is 15 February 2013 (extended from January 2013), and you should receive a determination of acceptance by 8 March 2013.
PLEASE NOTE THIS POLICY CHANGE:
It was agreed at the 2012 Business Meeting that those who wish to submit proposals for inclusion in the annual meeting program must be registered for the annual meeting at the time the proposal is submitted. If your presentation does not get accepted onto the program, you may withdraw your meeting registration by sending a notice to the Annual Meeting Coordinator. Such requests received by 10 March 2013 will be eligible for a full refund.
Note – due to delays in setting up the registration page at the SBL website, you may submit your paper proposal and then register later once the website is ready. Your paper will not be eligible for acceptance or included in the program until we have received your registration.
For the first time, this year EGLBS will be hosting a poster session for those who would like to share their research through a more visual and conversational medium. Students particularly are encouraged to consider this avenue for making an entrée into the world of professional discourse. See the Poster Session page for details.
Poster-session proposals will be accepted until 1 March 2013.
PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PAPERS AND POSTERS
The paper or poster proposal should be in DOC, DOCX, ODC, or RTF format and must include:
- Nature of the Presentation (Paper or Poster)
- Presentation Title
- Presenter's name, professional affiliation (e.g., university or church name), and status (undergrad, grad. student, Ph.D. candidate, faculty, pastor, etc.)
- Contact information (e-mail address, daytime telephone)
- Abstract (no more than 150 words) NB: An excessively long abstract or failure to include one or more of these data may result in disqualification of your proposal.
- Equipment needs.
-Paper sessions will be provided with a laptop, LCD projector, projection screen, and podium. Indicate any other equipment you will require or, if none, so state.
-Most items in the Poster Session will be mounted on the walls of one of the meeting rooms. A limited number of display tables will be available. Indicate which type of display space you will require for your poster.
All proposals require the foregoing information. There are three contingencies which would require you to send the entire text of your presentation as well as the proposal itself:
- This would be your first presentation at the EGLBS;
- You are submitting to the "Miscellaneous" section; or
- You are applying for either the Student Paper Prize or the SBL Regional Scholar Award.
NB: If you need to email your paper with the proposal, please save the essay in PDF format and preview the file to ensure that any foreign fonts, diagrams, tables, or other printer-dependent features will appear correctly in the attachment.
If your topic does not fit naturally into one of the following categories, please send the proposal as well as the entire presentation to Annual Meeting@EGLBS so the Coordinator can determine where it might best enhance the program.

- Comparative Literature of the Ancient Near East & Mediterranean World
- Non-Canonical Jewish & Christian Writings
This is also the program section to which to submit ideas for a special colloquium, panel discussion, or seminar you would like to arrange. If you are proposing a panel, be sure to include not only the panel title, abstract, and name of the moderator, but also the names and contact information for all the intended panelists.
